Highway through Summerland, B.C., reopened with limited hours, stopping restrictions

The primary highway connecting Summerland, British Columbia, has reopened, offering a limited view of the devastation wrought by a rapidly spreading wildfire last weekend. While charred hillsides still emitted smoke, the most visible damage from the road was a local inn reduced to rubble after the flames jumped the highway.

The Bald Range blaze, identified as a wildfire of note by the BC Wildfire Service, continues to rage out of control. It has now consumed more than 190 square kilometers of land. This fire is among four classified as significant, alongside the Pear Lake fire near Clinton and the Ainslie Creek and Brunswick Creek fires near Boston Bar.

The reopening of the highway provides a crucial, albeit somber, glimpse into the destruction for residents returning to assess their properties. The limited access underscores the ongoing efforts to manage the wildfire and ensure public safety.
