Historic step for the Mediterranean: Minister announces major marine protection campaign

Turkey is launching what Environment and Urbanisation Minister Murat Kurum called the Mediterranean’s largest environmental protection campaign, with Fethiye at its centre.

Kurum said the project, implemented by the Turkey Environment Agency under the Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change, will address threats to the marine ecosystem. The campaign includes removing 16.2 million cubic metres of seabed sludge from Fethiye.

The minister also announced the introduction of a mooring buoy system. The system is intended to protect seagrass meadows by reducing the need for boats to drop anchors, while also preventing uncontrolled mooring and helping regulate marine traffic.
