Historic Verloren Kostmolen windmill in Schaffen to undergo major restoration

Schaffen, Belgium, is embarking on a significant restoration of its historic Verloren Kostmolen windmill. This landmark, also known as the Mill of the Village, has stood in its current location since 1903 and is recognized as a protected monument.

The windmill ceased operations in 1953 and has since fallen into disrepair. The city of Diest, in collaboration with the Flemish-Brabant Heritage Foundation (ERF), is launching the restoration project. The initial phase, starting July 20, will focus on work directly on the windmill's site.

A key and challenging phase of the restoration is scheduled for the week of August 17, when workers will use a crane to remove the mill's axle. This operation is highly dependent on dry weather and minimal wind. Local residents will be notified in advance of the exact date. The ultimate goal is to restore the windmill to full working order, allowing it to turn once again.
