Ho Chi Minh City Accelerates Key Projects, Residents Voice Concerns Over Land Clearance

Ho Chi Minh City is pushing forward with critical infrastructure projects, where securing land for development is paramount to meeting project timelines and shaping the city's future. The expansion of Nguyen Duy Trinh Street in Long Trường ward, a route notorious for accidents and dubbed the "death road," is a prime example.

Residents like Dương Thị Kim Hồng, whose family has lived on the street for generations, face uncertainty. Her 70 m² home and pho stall, their primary income source, are slated for full acquisition. "This road is too narrow, accidents happen often," she said, "I've lived here over 50 years. I accept giving my land to the state, but I hope when we are resettled, authorities will consider placing us on the main road or near a major route so we can continue our business. I'm old, I don't know what I'll do if I'm moved to a deep alley."

Similar concerns are echoed by others, such as Hoàng Trung Quỳnh, who has witnessed numerous collisions involving container trucks and motorcycles. He supports the road expansion but hopes for fair compensation reflecting the land's actual value. He also seeks assistance with construction permits and land use certificates for the remaining property to stabilize their lives.

The Nguyen Duy Trinh road upgrade project will widen the affected section to 30 meters, necessitating the acquisition of over 73,000 m² of land and impacting nearly 300 households. The project's total investment is 1,858 billion VND, with over 1,500 billion VND allocated for compensation, support, and resettlement. Local authorities are consulting residents on the compensation plan, which will consider land type and location, and are involving affected households in the compensation council.
