Vietnam highway interchange design to change to avoid wartime bunkers

Construction on Vietnam's Cam Lo-La Son expressway is facing a design revision after the unexpected discovery of six wartime military bunkers. The project management board has proposed adjusting the roundabout design at the interchange with provincial road 12B, located near Hue city, to circumvent these historical remnants.

Officials confirmed that the discovered bunkers, described as pentagonal structures made of reinforced concrete, were found on Hill Xuoc during the ongoing construction. This location offers a strategic vantage point overlooking a section of the Huong River. The discovery has led to a temporary halt in construction activities at the interchange site as authorities assess the situation.

The proposed solution involves maintaining the roundabout's location but slightly altering one of its connecting roads to bypass the military relics. The bunkers have been handed over to the Hue City Military Command for management. The Cam Lo-La Son expressway, which is being expanded to four lanes, is a critical infrastructure project intended to ease traffic congestion in Hue's city center and shorten travel times to the expressway.

The interchange, once completed, is expected to create a direct connection from the expressway to the Nguyen Hoang Bridge area in central Hue and the Tuan Bridge interchange. This development is anticipated to significantly reduce traffic pressure on urban roads and improve overall connectivity for the region.
