Ho Chi Minh City district hands over land for Ben Thanh-Can Gio metro line

Can Gio district in Ho Chi Minh City has officially handed over more than 1,086,000 square meters of land to the investor for the Ben Thanh-Can Gio metro line project. This significant transfer of land, facilitated by the cooperation of local residents, marks a crucial step forward for the major transportation infrastructure initiative in the southern part of the city.

The handover process saw the Can Gio District Investment and Construction Management Board working with affected households. Approximately 86,267 square meters of land from a total of 96,935 square meters along the route from Ha Thanh bridge to a 39-hectare area adjacent to the Can Gio coastal urban area have been transferred. Additionally, over 1 million square meters of state-managed land were also handed over to expedite construction.

Local authorities have approved land valuations and compensation plans amounting to over 379 billion VND. Twenty-seven cases were affected by the project, including 22 individuals and 5 organizations. Affected households have either received payments or will have funds placed in temporary bank accounts as per the Land Law of 2024. Notably, one household received over 15.6 billion VND for nearly 910 square meters, while another received nearly 25.5 billion VND for over 1,600 square meters.

Residents have expressed their agreement with the compensation and support policies, voluntarily handing over their land. This consensus is considered vital for maintaining the project's timeline. The Ben Thanh-Can Gio metro line will traverse nine communes and wards in Ho Chi Minh City, with construction expected to begin in December 2025 and operations commencing in 2028. The line will feature six operational trains and one spare, running from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, with a train departing every 20 minutes.
