Ho Chi Minh City Invests $9 Million in 89 Projects to Combat Natural Disasters

Ho Chi Minh City is set to invest nearly 228 billion Vietnamese dong (approximately $9 million USD) from its Disaster Prevention Fund to bolster defenses against natural hazards. The city's People's Committee has approved the use of these funds for the construction and repair of 89 critical infrastructure projects.

These initiatives are designed to safeguard more than 10,000 households from the escalating threats of landslides, flooding, and high tides, particularly in vulnerable areas. The plan, proposed by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, targets 21 specific wards and communes, addressing urgent needs to mitigate risks during the upcoming rainy and storm seasons.

The projects will focus on strengthening riverbanks and canals, improving water drainage systems, and enhancing the city's overall resilience to extreme weather events. Upon completion, these structures are expected to directly benefit over 10,144 households and protect more than 9,100 hectares of land. Local authorities are responsible for ensuring the timely and quality execution of these projects, adhering to all regulations and conducting regular safety checks.

During construction, local areas must implement "on-site" response measures, especially during periods of heavy rain, high tides, and other natural disasters leading up to the 2027 Lunar New Year. The People's Committee has tasked the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development with overseeing the progress, providing guidance, and resolving any emerging issues. The department will also ensure that the funds from the Disaster Prevention Fund are managed and disbursed according to regulations.
