Ho Chi Minh City to build dedicated road for container trucks to Cat Lai port

Ho Chi Minh City is moving forward with plans to establish a dedicated route connecting the Cat Lai and Phu Huu ports to key transportation arteries, including Ring Road 3 and the HCMC-Long Thanh-Dau Giay expressway. This initiative is designed to alleviate the significant volume of container trucks currently using existing urban roads.

According to Tran Huu Tin, Deputy Head of the Construction Quality Management Department at the HCMC Department of Construction, the city will invest in this specialized road. The route will be separated from residential areas and directly link to external transport networks. This aims to gradually decrease the number of container trucks on roads such as Nguyen Thi Dinh, Nguyen Duy Trinh, and Dong Van Cong.

The Cat Lai and Phu Huu port areas have long faced immense pressure due to the proximity of ports and depots to residential zones. This has led to overloaded traffic systems, posing risks of congestion and traffic accidents. To address these issues, the Department of Construction has advised the HCMC People's Committee to seek approval from the City People's Council for the investment in the Cat Lai-Phu Huu inter-port road project, which was passed on February 6, 2026.

The dedicated route is slated for completion by 2028. Additionally, the city is adjusting the timeline for upgrading and expanding Nguyen Duy Trinh Street, a section connecting Ring Road 2 to the Cat Lai-Phu Huu port cluster, which is expected to be finished by 2027. Once these projects are completed, freight transport vehicles will have more convenient access to the ports, easing traffic pressure and reducing the incidence of container trucks passing through residential areas, thereby lowering the risk of accidents on current routes.
