Hoi An Crematorium, Abandoned for Over 20 Years, Awaits Decision on its Fate

A crematorium project in Hội An, initiated over two decades ago, now stands abandoned, prompting Da Nang city authorities to conduct a comprehensive review of its legal standing. The project, located in Hội An Tây ward, has fallen into disrepair, with many of its constructed facilities, including the main building, office, columbarium, and utility infrastructure, showing significant signs of degradation. The site has also become a target for illegal dumping, negatively impacting the local environment and urban aesthetics.

Lê Văn Tuấn, Deputy Director of the Da Nang Department of Construction, stated that the city's People's Committee has directed a thorough examination of the project's documentation. This review aims to establish a basis for deciding how to handle the derelict facility, ensuring that public assets are not squandered. The People's Committee of Hội An Tây ward is tasked with scrutinizing all related paperwork and proposing a resolution.

Initial findings suggest that no official decision was ever made to halt the project's implementation. Previous directives from the former Quảng Nam Provincial People's Committee indicated a need to finalize settlement procedures for completed work and continue investment in the remaining phases. Therefore, any proposed solution must follow a complete legal review, including investment procedures and compliance with relevant laws, to prevent financial loss and waste.

The Department of Construction has formally requested the Hội An Tây ward People's Committee to expedite the review of all project documents. This includes identifying procedures related to project termination and other legal matters. Based on this review, the city will consider options such as completing the construction, changing the facility's function in line with approved urban planning, or disposing of the assets according to current regulations. The chosen path must adhere to public investment laws, asset management principles, and urban planning guidelines, ensuring efficient land use and preventing the waste of invested resources.

While awaiting the final decision, Da Nang city authorities have instructed the Hội An Tây ward People's Committee to enhance management of the project site. This includes actively preventing and addressing illegal dumping to maintain environmental hygiene and the area's appearance. The Hội An crematorium project, approved in 2003 by the former Quảng Nam Provincial People's Committee, was planned on approximately 17 hectares with an initial investment of nearly 13 billion Vietnamese đồng.
