Home Affairs Minister: Regional leaders must maintain solidarity for stability

Indonesia's Minister of Home Affairs, Muhammad Tito Karnavian, has emphasized the critical role of the Regional Leadership Coordination Forum (Forkopimda) in maintaining solidarity to ensure political and security stability, which serves as the foundation for regional development. Speaking at Gedhong Pracimosono in Yogyakarta, Karnavian underscored that unity among regional stakeholders is paramount for a secure and conducive environment.

Karnavian pointed out that stable conditions are essential for successful development, particularly in Java and Bali, which are national activity hubs and home to nearly 60 percent of Indonesia's population. He warned that unrest in various regions could disrupt governance and development, noting that even minor conflicts or acts of violence can diminish the effectiveness of regional administration and progress.

To foster this stability, Karnavian called for strengthened communication and coordination, both formal and informal, among all Forkopimda members. He cited past experiences where cohesive leadership has enabled regions to resolve issues more swiftly and prevent conflicts from escalating.

Development can only proceed well if regional conditions remain safe and conducive. Various incidents of unrest in several regions can disrupt the implementation of governance and development.

Furthermore, the Home Affairs Minister urged regional governments to revitalize the Religious Harmony Forum (FKUB). Karnavian described FKUB as a vital instrument for maintaining interfaith harmony and preventing religiously motivated social conflicts. Regions with active FKUBs are generally more adept at identifying and mitigating potential conflicts early on, compared to those that only engage such forums when problems have already surfaced.

Karnavian also encouraged regional heads, especially those with adequate fiscal capacity, to allocate budgets through the Regional Revenue and Expenditure Budget (APBD) to support FKUB activities.
