Honduran cardinal calls to eradicate 'weeds' and punish plunderers

Honduran Cardinal Óscar Andrés Rodríguez urged the nation to eradicate "weed" and sow "good wheat" for justice and mutual respect during a Sunday homily. He criticized the country's polarization and injustices, calling for a society based on the common good. "Our Honduras should not be a field full of weeds, but let us sow it full of good wheat that bears fruit, a fruit of justice, a fruit of love, a fruit of understanding, a fruit of mutual respect," he stated.

Rodríguez lamented the divisions fueled by political differences and societal conflicts. "How much hatred is there in our Honduras? See if not how much confrontation, often over political ideas, or even worse, over a candidate or a former candidate or whoever. That is not God's plan," he emphasized.

The cardinal also addressed corruption, denouncing those who have allegedly enriched themselves through illicit means. "All those who have done evil, who have plundered the country, and who seem to be there, that nothing happens to them, and who are enjoying ill-gotten gains. The Lord has patience and is merciful," he said. He urged public servants to act with responsibility and a spirit of service, calling for Honduras to be "good wheat, a good field."

Despite the challenges, Rodríguez encouraged Hondurans not to lose hope. He asserted that "evil will never triumph" and urged perseverance in doing good, concluding that even if evil seems to have all the resources, "the small seed will always bear good fruit."
