Honduras to field experienced and young athletes at Santo Domingo Games

Honduras is set to compete in the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo with a robust delegation of 140 athletes spanning 27 sports. This team represents a strategic blend of seasoned international competitors and a new generation of athletes who have recently delivered historic performances at the 2025 Central American Sports Games held in Guatemala.

The Honduran contingent boasts regional champions, recent record-holders, and athletes with experience on the world stage. The nation is particularly optimistic about its medal prospects in disciplines such as wrestling, swimming, athletics, tennis, and cycling. A cornerstone of the team is wrestler Kevin Mejía, one of Honduras's most decorated athletes in the current Olympic cycle. Mejía, competing in the 97-kilogram category, secured a silver medal at the 2018 Barranquilla Games and has earned medals in the Pan American Games, including silver in Toronto 2015 and bronze in Santiago 2023, alongside a historic overall Pan American gold.

In swimming, Diego René Dulieu emerges as a significant promise for Honduras. He captured two gold medals in the 800m and 1500m freestyle events at the 2023 Central American Games, establishing himself as a dominant force in regional long-distance swimming. His participation in world championships and his development within the US collegiate circuit bolster his chances against top Caribbean competitors.

Another rising star is Winston Campbell, who recently set a new Central American record in the discus throw with a mark of 53.17 meters, earning him a gold medal at the 2025 regional competition. In tennis, Natalie Gabriela Espinal aims to replicate her previous success after winning the women's singles gold at the last Central American Games. Her competitive maturity and experience in high-pressure matches make her a key contender for Honduras.

Mountain biking also holds medal aspirations, with regional champion Luis Enrique López leading the charge. López achieved a landmark victory for Honduras, surpassing traditional powerhouses like Costa Rica.
