Hoops face uphill struggle after defeat in Armenia

Shamrock Rovers face a difficult task to advance in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers after a 2-0 defeat against Ararat-Armenia in Yerevan. Goals from Sandro Lima and Zidane Banjaqui in the second half condemned the Irish side to a loss in the first leg.

The match, played at the Vazgen Sargsyan Republican Stadium, saw a resolute defensive performance from Stephen Bradley's team undone by the Armenian hosts. This was Shamrock Rovers' third game in eight days, a demanding schedule that began with a victory over Floriana and included a domestic cup tie against Cork City.

Ararat-Armenia, buoyed by their first-ever Champions League victory in the previous round against Riga, started strongly. However, Rovers managed to frustrate the hosts for much of the first half, with the score remaining goalless at the break. Despite enjoying periods of possession, Rovers struggled to create clear-cut chances.

The breakthrough came shortly after halftime when Lee Grace's pass intended for Lopes was intercepted by Sandro Lima. The Brazilian forward then skillfully maneuvered past Lopes and rounded goalkeeper Ed McGinty to score the opening goal in the 51st minute. Rovers nearly responded immediately, but an Adam Brennan cross to Aaron Greene narrowly missed the target. The Armenian side secured their victory in the 80th minute through substitute Zidane Banjaqui, giving them a significant aggregate lead heading into the second leg at Tallaght Stadium.
