Hospital collapses after landslide in Calabar following heavy rains

A hospital building in Calabar, the capital of Nigeria's Cross River State, collapsed on Thursday, August 13, after a severe landslide triggered by relentless heavy rainfall. The UNICEM Hospital structure reportedly crumbled following hours of torrential downpour that destabilized the hillside where it was situated.

Social media platforms were flooded with videos showing sections of the hospital succumbing to the landslide as onlookers watched from a safe distance. A pharmacist based in Calabar, who shared one of the videos, attributed the collapse directly to the heavy rains and the resulting landslide. As of Friday, emergency authorities had not provided official confirmation regarding casualties, though eyewitness accounts suggested the incident caused significant panic in the vicinity.

Footage captured the dramatic moment a large mass of earth slid into the hospital complex before parts of the building gave way, leaving behind a trail of concrete debris and exposed reinforcement bars. The collapse has intensified existing concerns about Calabar's susceptibility to landslides, flooding, and erosion, particularly during the annual rainy season.

Experts and residents have pointed to factors such as development on unstable slopes, inadequate drainage systems, and lax enforcement of building regulations as contributing causes. The incident is expected to fuel renewed demands for more stringent building controls and thorough geotechnical assessments before any construction commences in areas prone to erosion and landslides.
