How Banten Is Responding to Anak Krakatau's Volcanic Ashfall

Banten's disaster agency has raised its preparedness as Mount Anak Krakatau's activity increases and volcanic ash affects the region. A circular issued on September 7 sets out seven measures for local authorities and residents.

The first measure requires regular mapping and monitoring of ash impacts. Officials will track the direction and spread of the ash, affected areas, community conditions, public facilities, transportation, environmental health and effects on other sectors.

Authorities will also check evacuation routes, warning signs and evacuation sites. They are preparing logistics and disaster equipment for ash impacts and possible evacuations, while requiring supplies to reach residents quickly and accurately if needed.

The agency will restrict community activities and the presence of tourists, hikers and fishermen in potentially affected areas. The restrictions will depend on disaster-prone-area classifications, the volcano's activity level and recommendations from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation. Officials said they would clearly communicate the measures to the public.

Residents are being encouraged to prepare disaster-alert bags containing necessities, important documents and protective equipment such as masks, goggles and face shields. The agency also advised people to protect water sources by covering them against ash contamination. Banten officials urged local disaster agencies to increase vigilance and ensure that the public receives accurate and timely information. The Geological Agency said Tuesday that the continuous eruption had begun on Friday.
