AirNav Says Six Airports Have Reopened, Three Remain Closed

AirNav Indonesia said six airports previously affected by volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau had resumed operations, while three others remained closed until an estimated 10 a.m. The changes followed updated aeronautical information and safety evaluations.

The reopened airports were Soekarno-Hatta International, Halim Perdanakusuma, Husein Sastranegara, Budiarto in Tangerang, Pondok Cabe in South Tangerang and Pagar Alam’s Atung Bungsu Airport. Radin Inten II in Lampung, Muhammad Taufiq Kiemas and Salakanagara Tanjung Lesung in Pandeglang remained closed.

The issuance of the NOTAM refers to changes in ash distribution that affect flight operations, so based on the latest safety evaluation and aeronautical information, several airports can resume operations.

Hermana Soegijantoro, AirNav Indonesia’s executive vice president for corporate secretary, said the latest NOTAM reflected changes in the ash distribution affecting flight operations. AirNav also considered conditions observed at the affected airports, including the results of periodic volcanic ash paper tests conducted on September 7.

“AirNav Indonesia will continue monitoring developments in volcanic activity and the spread of volcanic ash, while coordinating with regulators and aviation stakeholders,” Hermana said in a written statement. He said aeronautical information would continue to be updated as conditions changed and further flight-safety evaluations were completed.
