How Nigerians can apply for 2026 UK commonwealth fellowships

The United Kingdom has announced the opening of applications for its 2026/27 Commonwealth Fellowship Programme, providing fully funded opportunities for mid-career professionals and university academics from Commonwealth nations. The UK in Nigeria shared the announcement on its X handle, urging eligible candidates to submit their applications before the deadline of August 25, 2026.

The fellowship program features two main strands: Commonwealth Professional Fellowships and Commonwealth Academic Fellowships. Professional Fellowships are designed for mid-career professionals to engage in development activities with UK host organizations in their respective sectors. Academic Fellowships are intended for university academic staff who hold a PhD and are employed by a university within a Commonwealth country, excluding the UK.

Approximately 40 fellowships are planned for the 2026/27 cycle. Around 10 will be available to citizens of Commonwealth countries not eligible for official development assistance, while the remaining 30 are for citizens of countries that do receive such assistance. The program supports six key development themes: science and technology for development; improving population health, health systems and capacity; promoting innovation and entrepreneurship; strengthening peace, security and governance; strengthening resilience and response to crises; and access, inclusion and opportunity.

To be eligible, Professional Fellowship applicants need at least five years of relevant full-time or equivalent part-time work experience. Academic Fellowship applicants must possess a PhD and be employed by a university in an eligible Commonwealth country. All applicants must be citizens of, or hold refugee status in, an eligible Commonwealth country, be permanent residents, and be employed by an organization they intend to return to after the fellowship. They must also provide at least two references, including one from their current employer, and should not have undertaken a Commonwealth Fellowship in the past five years. Professional Fellowships typically last six weeks to three months, beginning between mid-February and mid-March 2027, while Academic Fellowships are three months long, scheduled to start in January or February 2027.
