How Romania Became an Atomic Power in Southeast Europe: The Story of the First Nuclear Reactor and the Brilliant Physicists Who Built It

On July 31, 1957, Romania achieved a significant scientific milestone by activating its first nuclear reactor, becoming the first nation in Southeast Europe to operate such technology outside the Soviet Union. This accomplishment represented a peak in Romanian nuclear physics, realized at the scientific center in Măgurele.

The development occurred against the backdrop of a global nuclear arms race that intensified after the United States used atomic bombs on Japan in August 1945 and the Soviet Union successfully tested its own atomic bomb in 1949. This period saw nations like Great Britain (1952), France (1960), and China (1964) developing nuclear capabilities, driven by Cold War tensions and a desire for strategic advantage.

Romania's entry into the atomic race, however, was driven by scientific research rather than military ambitions. The foundation for this achievement was laid in 1949 when Professor Horia Hulubei, a distinguished physicist with a doctorate from Paris, established the Institute of Physics of the Academy. Initially operating from the Oteteleșanu manor in Măgurele, the institute began with a small team of 20 researchers.

Under Hulubei's leadership, the institute fostered a world-class community of Romanian physicists, particularly in atomic physics. This elite scientific school gained international renown and secured the necessary funding to pursue advanced research. The institute's work culminated in the successful operation of the nuclear reactor, marking a period of significant scientific advancement for Romania.
