Romanian Senate website hit by cyberattack, internal probe launched

The website of the Romanian Senate has reportedly been targeted by a cyberattack, causing temporary disruptions to the institution's online platform. Sources cited by Antena 3 CNN indicated that the attack was ultimately repelled, allowing the website to continue functioning, albeit with some operational difficulties.

In response to the incident, the General Secretariat of the Senate announced it will initiate an internal investigation to clarify the circumstances surrounding the attack. The findings of this investigation will be compiled into a report and presented during a meeting of the Permanent Bureau. Notably, the National Directorate for Cybersecurity (DNSC) has not yet been formally notified of the breach, according to the same sources.

These sources also claim that the attack did not compromise the institution's overall functionality or the integrity of the data held by the Senate. "The Senate's website was not in danger, nor was the integrity of the institution's data jeopardized," sources told Antena 3 CNN.

IT specialists at the Senate are continuing their efforts to identify the origin of the attack and potential perpetrators. This incident follows a recent, more extensive cyberattack on the National Agency for Cadastre and Land Registration (ANCPI), which caused the institution's most significant technical outage to date. Data stolen during the ANCPI attack was reportedly offered for sale on July 15, shortly after the compromise of its IT infrastructure. The Algerian hacker group claiming responsibility for that attack is believed to operate for financial gain rather than as a state actor, according to Euronews.
