HRADC welcomes progress in remand centre investigation

The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (FHRADC) has welcomed the steps taken by the Fiji Corrections Service and the Fiji Police Force to investigate an alleged assault on a remand prisoner at the Lautoka Remand Centre. The commission noted the charging of one corrections officer with assault and the suspension of six others pending internal disciplinary actions.

Commissioner Alefina Vuki emphasized that these processes must be conducted independently, transparently, and in line with the law, ensuring the rights of all involved are respected. A team from the FHRADC recently visited the remand centre to assess the welfare of the prisoner in question.

The commission stated it will continue to monitor the situation and intends to conduct inspections of correctional facilities across Fiji in the coming weeks.
