HSE investigates alleged disrespect towards dementia patient at University Hospital Limerick

The Health Service Executive (HSE) has launched an investigation into a video circulating on social media that allegedly shows a healthcare worker displaying disrespectful behavior towards an elderly patient with dementia. The incident is believed to have occurred at University Hospital Limerick (UHL) in late May or early June 2024.

We want answers. I wouldn’t wish this on anyone. We are devastated and heartbroken.

The patient in the video, Ita Tobin, who was being treated for a suspected heart attack at UHL, passed away from natural causes on August 23rd. The footage, recorded by another patient, emerged online a day after the first anniversary of Tobin's death, drawing widespread attention and condemnation.

In the video, the healthcare worker is heard abruptly telling Tobin "No" when she asked for a cup of tea and allegedly calling her "crazy." When Tobin inquired about the food on her table, the worker responded dismissively, "You can see, so why are you asking?"

Tobin's family described themselves as "traumatized" and "devastated" by the video. Her daughter, Aisling Hogan, expressed profound anger and heartbreak, stating, "I am sick to my stomach that someone could treat another person like that. It’s disgusting. It’s vile. How can anyone ... treat somebody like that? It is inhumane.

The HSE acknowledged the "deeply concerning" footage, stating that the behavior depicted falls "far short of the standards of dignity, respect and compassionate care" expected. Efforts are underway to verify the specific location, date, and full circumstances surrounding the incident. The family has also contacted the Minister for Health, who extended condolences and acknowledged the family's distress.
