Hualien Man Gets One Year for Robbing Student of NT$100 for Noodles

Justice has been served in Hualien, where a man has been handed a one-year prison sentence for a brazen robbery targeting a young primary school student. The incident, which saw the perpetrator forcibly snatch NT$100 from the child's pocket to buy food, has drawn condemnation and highlights a disturbing trend of individuals preying on the most vulnerable.

The court found that Lee, being an adult, intentionally robbed a child under 12 years old, and according to the 'Children and Youth Welfare and Rights Protection Act,' his sentence must be aggravated.

The Hualien District Court's decision reflects a firm stance against such acts. The court found the accused, a man in his late thirties identified by the surname Lee, guilty of robbery against a child. The sentence takes into account not only the severity of the crime but also the perpetrator's history of offenses, which include previous convictions for obstructing official duties and theft.

According to the investigation, the incident occurred on a morning in late January when Lee, spotting the fourth-grade student, approached him and, with a threatening gesture, demanded the money. The young victim, understandably terrified, was unable to resist as NT$100 was taken from his pocket. Lee then proceeded to a nearby noodle stall and spent NT$50 of the stolen money.

Considering Lee's past record of offenses, including obstructing official duties and theft, and his poor conduct, as well as committing violence against a child for a mere NT$100, it is evident that his concept of the rule of law is extremely weak.

The court's judgment emphasized that Lee, despite being a young adult, resorted to criminal means instead of seeking legitimate ways to support himself. His decision to target an unsuspecting child, who had no means of defense, was deemed particularly egregious. The court also noted Lee's repeated brushes with the law, including a past incident where he threatened police officers with a cleaver and another where he assaulted a sanitation worker, indicating a persistent disregard for the law and public order. The sentence of one year, along with the confiscation of the remaining NT$50, aims to deter future offenses and underscore the seriousness with which such crimes against children are treated in Taiwan.
