Hualien's Wanli River landslide dam reaches alert level amid rising waters

Authorities have issued a yellow alert for a landslide dam on the Wanli River in Hualien, Taiwan, as water levels continue to rise and overflow. The situation has prompted precautionary evacuations in eight villages across Wanrong and Fenglin townships.

The alert comes as Hualien's mountainous regions are expected to receive significant rainfall, with an estimated 281 millimeters accumulating over the next 24 hours. This is attributed to a low-pressure trough and prevailing southwest winds.

The Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency's Hualien branch is closely monitoring the dam, which poses a risk to downstream communities. The precautionary evacuations are intended to ensure the safety of residents in the affected areas before any potential worsening of the situation.
