Reports suggesting Hugo Broos has stepped down as Bafana Bafana head coach have been firmly dismissed by the South African Football Association (SAFA). The national football body issued a statement Friday, confirming that the Belgian remains in his position and rejecting claims that his five-year tenure has ended following the team's 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

The clarification comes after a Belgian outlet reported that Broos, 74, had described his decision to leave as "irreversible." These reports also suggested that SAFA president Danny Jordaan was considering alternative roles for the coach. However, SAFA has insisted these claims are false.

"Broos remains as the head coach of Bafana Bafana and reports claiming the contrary are completely false," the SAFA statement read. The association noted that similar speculation arose after South Africa won bronze at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, when Broos was linked with the Tunisia job, but he ultimately stayed.

SAFA highlighted Broos's success in transforming the team's fortunes, including their historic achievement at the 2026 FIFA World Cup where they reached the knockout stage for the first time. He also guided them to an AFCON bronze medal. Broos is currently in Belgium and expected to return to South Africa later this month.
