Hundreds evacuated from Berlin refugee shelter after fire

Several hundred residents were evacuated from a refugee accommodation in Berlin-Spandau early Saturday morning following a fire that broke out in the building. The Berlin fire department reported that four people sustained injuries due to smoke inhalation.

The blaze ignited in the hallway of the fourth floor of the six-story building for reasons that remain under investigation. Smoke spread to the fifth and sixth floors, prompting a large-scale response from emergency services. Firefighters managed to extinguish the fire, but the fourth floor has been declared temporarily uninhabitable.

Approximately 50 to 60 residents from the affected floor were relocated to emergency housing. The incident highlights the challenges faced by temporary accommodations and the vulnerability of residents in such situations.

Firefighters deployed 74 personnel to combat the blaze. While the cause of the fire is still being investigated, the immediate priority was ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents.
