Hundreds seek blessings from sacred well in Indramayu ahead of Prophet's birthday

As the commemoration of the Prophet Muhammad's birthday approaches, a unique tradition unfolds in Indramayu, Indonesia. Hundreds of residents, from the elderly to young children, flocked to the Pusaka Baiturrahmah Dermayu Mosque in Sindang district to partake in the Mandi Grujug ritual.

The heart of the tradition lies in the "Sumur Penganten," or Bride's Well, a sacred water source within the mosque's grounds. Worshippers, armed with buckets, eagerly scoop water from the well, which they then use to douse themselves and their children. Many also bring containers to take the blessed water home.

Participants like Vonny, who has observed the tradition for two years, seek spiritual blessings and good fortune. "I bathe here because this is a sacred mosque. I want to receive its blessings too," she shared. Teja, another resident, views the annual ritual as more than just a bath; it's a spiritual endeavor to achieve his aspirations. "My intention is for happiness, for our dreams. May they be granted by Allah Almighty," he expressed.

Teja also recounted a peculiar experience, noting that the water felt surprisingly warm upon contact with his skin, a stark contrast to the chilly night air. This perceived "miracle" adds another layer to the deeply held beliefs surrounding the Sumur Penganten, reinforcing its significance for the local community.
