Hungarian Court Upholds 15-Year Sentence for 2018 Murder of Elderly Woman After Retrial

Justice has finally been served in the tragic case of Zagyvarékas, where an elderly woman was brutally murdered in the summer of 2018. After a retrial, the Szeged Court of Appeal has handed down a final sentence of fifteen years imprisonment to the 36-year-old perpetrator.

The court found the 36-year-old man guilty of murder committed against a person who was limited in her ability to ward off the crime due to her advanced age.

The court found the man guilty of murdering an elderly victim, who was particularly vulnerable due to her age. The accused, who had a history of conflict with his parents stemming from drug abuse, had been wandering the streets of Zagyvarékas. On the evening of July 1, 2018, he entered the home of the 83-year-old victim, who was using a cane, and after an unknown altercation, fatally stabbed her multiple times in the neck and abdomen.

The accused can be released on conditional parole at the earliest after serving two-thirds of his sentence.

This conviction marks a significant turn after an initial acquittal in 2022. The Szolnok Court had previously ruled that there was insufficient conclusive evidence to prove the man's guilt. However, a subsequent retrial was initiated in 2024 following the emergence of new evidence, including a witness testimony, more comprehensive DNA analysis from the victim, and examination of samples from a blanket found on the scene. This new evidence was crucial in overturning the previous verdict and ensuring accountability for the heinous crime.
