Hungary's parliament to vote for new president amid nomination uncertainty

Hungary's parliament is scheduled to elect a new head of state on Tuesday, August 11, amid uncertainty as no candidates have yet been formally nominated. This pivotal vote comes after Prime Minister Péter Magyar's party, Tisa, secured victory in April elections, ending 16 years of rule by former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

Earlier in July, Magyar's government utilized a constitutional amendment to remove President Tamás Sulyok, whom the prime minister had publicly referred to as a "puppet" of Orbán. Following Sulyok's ouster, Magyar reportedly offered the presidency to chess legend and former world champion Judit Polgár, who declined the position, citing deep political divisions within Hungary.

The process for nominating a new president has drawn criticism from lawmakers and non-governmental organizations. They argue that, contrary to Magyar's initial promises, genuine public consultations regarding the head of state selection have not occurred. Magyar, however, responded by stating that Tisa had merely sought recommendations and had not initiated "societal consultations," asserting that the final choice rests with his party's parliamentary group and the Parliament itself.

The presidential office in Hungary is primarily ceremonial. Currently, the speaker of Parliament, Ágnes Forsthoffer, is serving as the interim president. The outcome of Tuesday's vote remains to be seen, with the opposition Fidesz party, formerly led by Orbán, announcing it will not participate in the election, deeming Sulyok's removal "illegitimate."
