Hunted bear family with cars – several sentenced to prison

A Swedish court has handed down prison sentences to five men for serious poaching offenses, marking a significant victory for wildlife protection in the Strömsund municipality. The case, which dates back to the autumn of 2023, involved a brutal act of hunting where a mother bear and her cub were pursued by vehicles before the mother was shot. The subsequent chase and killing of a cub has led to convictions for aggravated poaching.

According to prosecutor Åse Schoultz, the initial act involved the killing of the mother bear, followed by a continued pursuit of her cubs. The Östersund District Court found that three of the six initially accused men actively participated in the hunt for the cubs. These individuals have been sentenced to prison terms ranging from one year to one year and six months for aggravated poaching.

Further complicating the case, two other men received conditional sentences for poaching offenses. The sixth man was convicted solely for aggravated receiving of stolen goods. Notably, five of the convicted men are Norwegian nationals, highlighting the cross-border nature of such criminal activities. The court's decision underscores the severity of the crimes, particularly the illegal use of motor vehicles in the pursuit and the violation of protected status for mother bears with cubs during the licensed hunting season.

Swedish law strictly prohibits hunting bears with motor vehicles, and mother bears accompanied by cubs are protected under license hunting regulations. The convictions send a clear message that such blatant disregard for wildlife protection laws will not be tolerated. The sentences aim to deter future poaching incidents and reinforce the commitment to preserving Sweden's natural heritage.
