I’m depressed, says Chidimma Adetshina as S’Africa court delays deportation ruling

Former Miss Universe Nigeria, Chidimma Adetshina, expressed feelings of exhaustion and depression as a South African court postponed a ruling on her deportation case. The Cape Town Regional Court reserved judgment until August 19, leaving the 25-year-old beauty queen's fate uncertain.

Adetshina was arrested in June, with South Africa's Department of Home Affairs alleging she is residing in the country illegally. Her legal team countered these claims, asserting she was born in South Africa, has no significant ties to Nigeria, and poses no flight risk. The defense also highlighted a recent Western Cape High Court ruling that limits magistrates' authority in issuing arrest warrants for immigration detention.

The Department of Home Affairs accused Adetshina of lacking necessary immigration documents and retaining a South African passport despite holding Nigerian citizenship. Prosecutors further alleged she obtained Nigerian passports for herself and her child before securing a South African visa and re-entering the country via Mozambique. Her lawyers rejected these allegations, stating the department failed to conduct a fair investigation before invalidating her documents.

Despite the legal battle, Adetshina remains determined. "Exhausted – Yes, Burnt out – Yes, Depressed – Yes, Will I give up, No!" she declared on Instagram Stories. The case has drawn significant public attention since Adetshina withdrew from the Miss South Africa pageant due to nationality questions, later winning Miss Universe Nigeria.
