Nigerian man asks court to evict ex-wife to bring sick mother home

A Nigerian businessman, Lawal Hamisu, has appealed to a Shari'a Court in Kaduna to compel his former wife, Maman Muhammad, to leave his residence. Hamisu stated that he initially allowed Muhammad to stay after three pronouncements of divorce to facilitate the care of their children.

However, Hamisu claims the situation has deteriorated, alleging that Muhammad has "poisoned" their children's minds against him, leading to a loss of respect. He described the home environment as constantly troubled, citing instances where their oldest child has become physically aggressive and disrespectful towards him.

She has poisoned my children’s mind against me and they no longer respect me. Every day, there is trouble in the house. My oldest hits me now and doesn’t respect me as a father.

The primary reason Hamisu wants his ex-wife to leave is to make space for his sick mother, whom he wishes to bring home for care. He expressed his desire for a peaceful home environment conducive to caring for his ailing mother.

I want her to leave so that I can bring my sick mother to the house to take care of her.

In her defense, Maman Muhammad stated that she has nowhere else to go, identifying herself as an orphan with a three-year-old daughter who depends on her. She has requested the court to order her former husband to provide her with alternative accommodation.

Judge Malam Yakubu Abdullahi has adjourned the case until August 3 for a ruling, leaving the decision on the housing dispute pending.
