'Ice Princess' stars Hayden Panettiere and Michelle Trachtenberg die within a year

The Disney film 'Ice Princess' (2005) is now shrouded in tragedy, having lost both of its lead actresses within a little over a year. Michelle Trachtenberg, who played the aspiring figure skater Casey Carlyle, died in February 2025 at the age of 39. Her death was attributed to complications from diabetes mellitus.

Hayden Panettiere, who portrayed talented skater Jen Harwood and encouraged Carlyle to pursue her dreams, passed away on August 16, 2026. She was found unconscious by a friend, and despite resuscitation efforts, she could not be revived. An autopsy revealed cardiac arrest as the cause of death; Panettiere was 36 years old.

'Ice Princess' centered on Carlyle, a young woman pressured by her mother to attend Harvard. While researching physics laws in figure skating for a scholarship, she falls in love with the sport.
