Iceland Festival Sees Ticket Surge, Eyes Record Sunday Attendance

The National Festival in Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland, is buzzing with activity, with organizers anticipating a record-breaking Sunday due to a late surge in ferry ticket sales. Jonas Guðbjörn Jónsson, head of the festival committee, noted that while ticket buyers were more hesitant this year, possibly due to weather forecasts or the festival's timing before the end of the month, the desire to be in Vestmannaeyjar for the weekend remains strong.

The festival grounds have been packed with enthusiastic attendees enjoying a relaxed vibe, defying earlier predictions of low turnout. "The valley is full of people having a good time," Jónsson stated. "Herjólfur is swamped with bookings, and tickets have been flying out today. I think we're looking at some kind of record Sunday."

I think ticket buyers have been more undecided than in previous years. It might be related to the weather forecasts, it might be related to the festival starting almost before the end of the month, but whatever it is, everyone wants to be a Vestmannaeyingur during the commercial workers' weekend in Iceland.

Concerts on the main stage have been a hit, with performances by Birgitta Haukdal and Herra Hnetusmjör, who debuted the new festival song "Flugeldar" (Fireworks). The evening also featured sets from Retro Stefson and XXX Rottweiler. Other performers included Daniil, Hipsumhaps, Gísli Pálmi, Sprite Zero Klan, Tónhylur, Séra Bjössi, Haski, and Reu. The festival concludes with performances by Aron Can, Friðrik Dór, and Bandamenn, followed by a fireworks display.

Despite some wind from the south, the weather has been largely favorable, with sunshine and temperatures between 16 to 18 degrees Celsius on Saturday and Sunday. Minister of Culture, Innovation and Higher Education, Logi Einarsson, was among the attendees.
