Icelandic champion after only eight training sessions

Kristófer Snær Kaldal has achieved an extraordinary feat, becoming the Icelandic high jump champion with minimal training. Kaldal, who plays handball as a winger for Víking, had only attended eight high jump training sessions before securing the national title by clearing a height of over two meters.

The handball season ended earlier for us because we weren't in any playoffs after winning the league. Then I was struggling with back and groin injuries, so I waited two months until I was completely fresh.

His journey into high jump began after his handball season concluded earlier than expected. Dealing with previous back and groin injuries, Kaldal took two months to recover before returning to training. It was during this period that his coaches suggested he try high jump. Initially, he managed to clear 1.85 meters, a height that astonished both him and his coaches.

After a few training sessions, he participated in a cup competition and won with a jump over 1.94 meters.

Kaldal quickly progressed, winning a cup competition with a jump of 1.94 meters. This victory qualified him for the Icelandic Championships. During the championship, after only his eighth training session in the sport, he cleared 1.93 meters on his third attempt to win. In a show of ambition and for the crowd, he then raised the bar to two meters, successfully clearing it on his second attempt.

I came into the Icelandic Championships after winning the cup. On the third attempt, I jumped over 1.93 meters and had already won the competition. But I raised the bar to two meters basically just for the people and cleared it on the second attempt.

Reflecting on his success, Kaldal described the feeling as the best he has ever experienced. He noted the electric atmosphere created by his supporters, including his handball teammates Sindra Birni Hjaltested and Ásmundi Bessa Gíslasyni, as well as his family. While handball remains his priority, Kaldal is open to continuing in high jump, humorously noting that he is now nicknamed 'Kangaroo' due to his jumping prowess.

It was an amazing atmosphere from my guys, Sindra Birni Hjaltested and Ásmundur Bessi Gíslason. They made themselves heard well. Then my family was there too, and it was great that they got to see me become Icelandic champion.
