Icelandic Prosecutors Seek 6-10 Year Sentences in Reykholt Assault Case

Icelandic prosecutors are seeking substantial prison sentences for six individuals accused in a severe assault case that occurred in Reykholt in April 2024. The prosecution is requesting six to 10 years for three defendants and up to 10 years for two others, highlighting the gravity of the "especially dangerous and large-scale" physical assault.

The victim, a man in his seventies with Palestinian origins and Maltese citizenship, was attacked at his home. In addition to the physical violence, nearly 18 million Icelandic krónur were transferred from his bank account. The case involves six Icelandic nationals charged with the assault and subsequent financial crime.

Specific sentences have been requested for each defendant. For Ingunn Rut Sigurðardóttir and Andri Már Mortensen Birgisson, the prosecution seeks eight to 10 years. Ingunn is the victim's landlord's daughter and Andri's fiancée, and Andri is also the brother of another defendant, Pétur Már Mortensen Birgisson. The prosecution cited the intent behind Ingunn's actions and the significant physical and psychological harm to the victim.

For Sigurður Gunnar Ásgeirsson, the victim's landlord, neighbor, and acquaintance, six to eight years are sought. Pétur Már Mortensen Birgisson faces a proposed four to six-year sentence, with consideration given to his young age at the time of the offense. Níels Pálmari Benediktsson also faces a four to six-year sentence, with prosecutors noting his intent despite later disappearing. Finally, Halldór Logi Sigurðsson is targeted with a three to four-year sentence, taking into account the financial and physical consequences for the victim and Halldór's criminal record.
