IDB approves $80 million loan for Río Negro's agricultural boost

Río Negro province in Argentina will receive an $80 million loan from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to significantly enhance its agricultural sector. The financing is part of the Rural Productive Development Program, designed to bolster the province's agro-industrial competitiveness through strategic investments.

The IDB's funding will target critical areas for agricultural improvement. Key investments include upgrading irrigation infrastructure to increase water use efficiency, expanding access to sustainable rural electrification for production, and strengthening the institutional capacity of producers to manage and respond to climate-related risks such as forest fires, droughts, and hailstorms.

Viviana Alva Hart, the IDB's representative in Argentina, highlighted Río Negro's substantial potential for agricultural growth. She stated that the IDB's support for these strategic investments in water, energy, and risk management will create better conditions for producers, reflecting a commitment to productive and resilient growth for Argentina's regional economies.

Official details from the provincial government reveal specific projects, including modernizing the irrigation system in the Valle Inferior Development Institute (IDEVI) area, rural electrification in Guardia Mitre, and irrigation and electrification works in Margen Norte. The program also allocates $6 million for expanding production protection, such as installing hail nets.
