Idyllic Évian Becomes Global Center for Three-Day G7 Summit

The picturesque town of Évian, known for its thermal springs and mineral water, has once again become the center of international attention as it hosts a G7 summit. The event is taking place at the legendary Hôtel Royal, a palace overlooking Lake Geneva that has a history of hosting significant international gatherings.

French President Emmanuel Macron is serving as host for the second time, leading the summit from June 15 to 17. This occasion marks France's eighth time organizing a G7 or G8 summit, with previous events held in various locations across the country since 1975. The Hôtel Royal itself holds a special place in French diplomatic history, having hosted a notable G8 summit in 2003 under President Jacques Chirac.

Macron's decision to bring the summit back to Évian is a deliberate nod to its status as an iconic venue for contemporary French diplomacy. The Hôtel Royal, built in the early 20th century during Europe's Belle Époque, was designed to attract aristocracy and elites drawn to Évian's famed mineral waters. Its architecture reflects this era of splendor, blending Art Nouveau and Art Déco influences with monumental frescoes and grand terraces offering stunning views of Lake Geneva.

The hotel underwent a significant restoration completed in 2015, preserving its historical heritage while integrating modern luxury facilities. Its reputation for luxury, discretion, and isolation has made it an ideal location for high-level international meetings, now under stringent security. The summit includes leaders from the United States, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Japan, alongside invited nations such as Brazil, India, South Korea, Kenya, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Ukraine.
