IFW 2026: Pendopo and Julia Orlandy Showcase Modern Ulos Collection

Indonesia Fashion Week (IFW) 2026 buzzed with creativity as Pendopo and designer Julia Orlandy presented their "Nadi di Tondi" collection. This collaboration reimagined the traditional North Sumatran Ulos fabric, transforming it into nine modern, contemporary looks that captivated fashion enthusiasts.

Traditionally viewed as stiff and formal, Ulos was ingeniously crafted into stylish and functional pieces. The collection featured obi-style corsets made from brightly colored Ulos, paired with monochrome blouses and dresses for an elegant contrast. Other looks included Ulos blouses with turtleneck details and asymmetrical cuts, as well as casual sets adorned with flowing Ulos pieces, suitable for daily wear.

The collection's name, "Nadi di Tondi," draws inspiration from the Batak tradition of "mangulosi," which signifies bestowing warmth, prayers, and spiritual protection. Pendopo partnered with Julia Orlandy, known for designing for Miss Indonesia pageants, to translate this cultural heritage into a modern aesthetic. "We strived for modern contemporary designs so that the market and the public no longer see North Sumatran weaving as something 'heavy' or only for traditional events," explained Putu Laura, Head of Pendopo.

Through an intensive process of discussion and revision, Pendopo and Julia Orlandy developed a collection that is both elegant and casual. They aimed to create functional pieces that make Ulos more wearable and relevant for young urban dwellers. "We want to introduce to customers that Ulos is not just occasional. This collection is designed to be versatile, comfortable, and suitable for work, the office, or even gatherings," Laura added. The "Nadi di Tondi" collection successfully positions Ulos not just as a tradition, but as a part of timeless contemporary fashion trends.
