Iga Swiatek rallies to reach Toronto quarterfinals

World No. 8 Iga Swiatek demonstrated her resilience by coming back from a set down to defeat Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the WTA 1000 Canada quarterfinals. Kostyuk had initially seized control of the match, capitalizing on Swiatek's service struggles in the first set.

However, the Polish star transformed the match from the second set onwards. Swiatek elevated her intensity, found greater depth with her groundstrokes, and began dominating the rallies. "Clearly, I am in a different dynamic. I feel I can develop my game," Swiatek stated after the match. "Until the end, I had quite a lot of confidence in my game plan and my strengths."

The victory held particular significance for Swiatek, as Kostyuk had eliminated her in the round of 16 at Roland Garros earlier in May. This time, Swiatek delivered a decisive comeback, securing the win after two hours of play. The win marks Swiatek's sixth quarterfinal appearance of the season and her 29th career WTA 1000 quarterfinal.

Swiatek is set to face Russia's Diana Shnaider in the semifinals. Shnaider caused an upset by defeating third seed Jessica Pegula, the 2023 and 2024 Canadian Open champion, in straight sets. Shnaider's aggressive play overwhelmed Pegula, who struggled to find a way to turn the match around.
