Iguazu Falls Boat Accident Kills Tourist, Reignites Safety Debate

A fatal boat excursion accident near Iguazu Falls has prompted authorities to suspend tourist boat traffic for three days, reigniting safety concerns. A 26-year-old Dutch tourist died when a boat operated by Macuco Safari, a concessionaire with over 40 years of experience, capsized on the Brazilian side of the falls.

The incident has brought to mind two other tragic accidents in the past 27 years, which claimed a total of 10 lives. While local authorities and operators assert that they adhere to strict safety protocols, some sources question the transparency of the operations. Representatives from Iguazu Argentina SA, which manages the Argentine side of the park, expressed a desire to review the concession contract, including details on fees, insurance, and safety measures, noting that the Brazilian operator functions independently.

The Brazilian attraction sees approximately 30,800 visitors per month, with nearly 370,000 participating in the boat tour in 2025. Many Argentines now opt to stay in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, due to wider hotel options and favorable exchange rates. The operator, Macuco Safari, holds the international ISO 21101 certification for adventure tourism safety management, a standard met by few operators in Brazil. Both Brazilian and Argentine boat tours are classified as adventure tourism, carrying inherent risks.
