IKEA Kuching to Open in December, Strengthening East Malaysia Presence

IKEA Malaysia is set to open its first small-format store in Kuching, Sarawak, in December, marking a significant expansion into East Malaysia. This move aims to bring the popular Swedish home furnishing brand closer to consumers in Sarawak, who have largely relied on e-commerce channels for IKEA products until now.

Malcolm Pruys, Country Retail Director of IKEA Malaysia, stated that the opening is a direct response to customer feedback from Sarawak. "We have heard the feedback from customers in Sarawak and are excited that IKEA Kuching will be opening its doors soon," he said. "The opening of IKEA Kuching brings us one step closer to our goal of making the IKEA experience more accessible and relevant to the way people live here."

Unlike the larger IKEA stores found elsewhere in Malaysia, the Kuching outlet will feature a compact design. This format is intended to provide an easily navigable shopping experience, allowing customers to draw inspiration for home furnishings, explore various solutions, and purchase selected products for same-day takeaway. The store will also provide access to IKEA's wider product range.

Pruys emphasized that the store's design aims to reflect customers' own lives at home, offering practical and relevant solutions for family gatherings, daily organization, or maximizing space. The expansion into Sarawak is part of IKEA Malaysia's commitment to making well-designed and functional home furnishings more accessible. In preparation for the opening, IKEA Malaysia is collaborating with the local community to build its Kuching team, focusing on providing opportunities for local talent.
