Illegal Bagel Seasoning Containing Narcotics Seized in South Korea

Authorities have taken action against the online sale of a U.S.-made bagel seasoning after discovering it contains illegal poppy seeds. The Mapo Police Station in Seoul announced on the 4th that they had blocked transactions of the seasoning, which was being sold on second-hand trading platforms for between 4,000 and 8,000 won per bottle.

The product, primarily used as a topping for bagels, is a blend of dried poppy seeds, sesame seeds, garlic, and onions. However, a National Forensic Service analysis confirmed the presence of morphine and codeine, both controlled narcotics in South Korea. According to the Narcotics Control Act, selling or buying products containing narcotic ingredients is subject to criminal punishment for both parties.

There are cases where products sold as general food overseas are prohibited from import and distribution under domestic law.

Police investigations revealed instances where individuals attempted to purchase the seasoning with prior knowledge of its illegal contents. In response, police collaborated with the second-hand trading platforms to remove all related listings on August 27th. They have also implemented enhanced monitoring and a "transaction restriction pop-up" for new product registrations.

A police official emphasized that some products sold as ordinary food items overseas are prohibited from import and distribution in South Korea. They urged consumers to verify regulations before purchasing or selling foreign foods domestically, vowing strict action against the distribution of products containing narcotic ingredients.
