Ilves Midfielder Joona Veteli Seeks Transfer Amid Interest from HJK and KuPS

Joona Veteli, a 31-year-old midfielder for Finnish club Ilves, is looking to move before the current transfer window closes, with Veikkausliiga title contenders HJK and KuPS reportedly showing interest. Multiple independent sources suggest the player is eager for a change of scenery.

Veteli was a pivotal player for Ilves in previous seasons, but his role has significantly decreased this season. He has featured in only six Veikkausliiga matches, accumulating approximately one-fifth of the available playing time. This reduced involvement has apparently led Veteli to express his desire for a transfer as early as the spring.

Despite the player's wishes, Ilves's sports director, Iikka Miettinen, stated that no club has officially approached Ilves about a potential transfer. Veteli's contract with Ilves extends until the end of 2025, meaning any interested club would need to pay a transfer fee to secure his services. A recent injury to Veteli might have slowed down any potential transfer negotiations.

Both HJK and KuPS are actively seeking midfield reinforcements. HJK's head coach, Joonas Rantanen, has a prior connection with Veteli, having coached him at Ilves for the past two seasons. KuPS is a former club for Veteli, where he played from 2022 to 2023. This marks another instance where the two top clubs are competing for the same player, following their earlier pursuit of Tommi Jyry, who ultimately chose KuPS.
