‘Immediate, independent and exhaustive investigation’: Brazilian groups react to Vorcaro-Moraes case

Brazilian organizations focused on fighting corruption and defending public transparency have demanded an immediate, independent and exhaustive investigation into the case involving Banco Master banker Daniel Vorcaro and allegations concerning authorities across the country’s three branches of government.

Transparency International Brazil described the moment as one of the most delicate in Brazil’s institutional history. It said information made public about Vorcaro’s relationships with Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes and other authorities required a rigorous inquiry. “Brazil is facing one of the most serious moments in its institutional history,” the organization said. “The information that has come to light about the relationships between Minister Alexandre de Moraes and other authorities with banker Daniel Vorcaro reveals facts whose seriousness demands an immediate, independent and exhaustive investigation.”

The organization said the Supreme Federal Court, the Office of the Prosecutor General, the Senate and the Federal Police have constitutional responsibility for investigating the facts and, if appropriate, pursuing accountability proceedings. It nevertheless expressed concern about whether those institutions could operate with the necessary independence.

Transparency International also pointed to information involving other Supreme Court justices and officials who allegedly maintained relationships with people, companies or interests linked to Vorcaro and Banco Master. It said other justices received money, while the prosecutor general and the director general of the Federal Police received luxury hospitality and entertainment abroad paid for by the banker. The organization also cited government and opposition leaders in the Senate, including its president, as connected to the political and business circle surrounding the case. It warned that the crisis could become the subject of intense political and electoral disputes, while polarization and false information could contaminate the investigation.
