Independiente del Valle returns to Copa Libertadores quarterfinals after 10 years

Independiente del Valle is once again among South America's top eight football clubs after a decisive 3-1 victory over Deportes Tolima on August 25. The win secured their spot in the 2026 Copa Libertadores quarterfinals with a commanding 4-1 aggregate score.

This achievement carries significant historical weight for the Ecuadorian team. It marks their return to the Libertadores quarterfinals a decade after their remarkable 2016 campaign, where they reached the tournament final. Although they have since won other continental titles, reaching this stage of the Libertadores had eluded them until now.

The club's progression in the tournament also bolsters their efforts to accumulate ranking points for the 2029 Club World Cup. The victory over Tolima was sealed with authority, despite some pressure in the first half. Daykol Romero opened the scoring in the 58th minute, followed by a decisive second goal from Carlos González in the 75th minute, effectively ending Tolima's hopes.

Deportes Tolima managed a late consolation goal in the 84th minute through Junior Hernández, but Matías Perelló's strike in the final minute of the match cemented Independiente del Valle's 3-1 win and their place in the next round.
