In another first-leg match, Estudiantes of Argentina drew 1-1 with Chile's Universidad Católica in La Plata. Estudiantes took an early lead through Joaquín Tobio Burgos, but Fernando Zampedri equalized for the visitors in the 80th minute, capitalizing on one of Universidad Católica's few clear chances. Estudiantes' Guido Carrillo expressed frustration, lamenting, "There were situations (to score), but this is the Cup, and if you don't score goals, they don't forgive you. Football is like that."

The second legs for both ties are scheduled for the following Tuesday. Fluminense and Independiente Rivadavia will face off again in Mendoza, while Universidad Católica will host Estudiantes in Santiago.
