Spanish teen Jódar reaches first Masters 1000 semifinal in Montreal

Nineteen-year-old Spanish tennis player Rafael Jódar has reached his first Masters 1000 semifinal in Montreal, continuing his meteoric rise in the professional circuit. Jódar secured his spot by defeating France's Arthur Fils 7-6 (7/5), 6-3, on Tuesday.

His compatriot, Daniel Mérida, was unable to advance, falling to American Learner Tien 6-3, 6-2. Tien will face defending champion Ben Shelton in the semifinals, while Jódar is set to play against American Brandon Nakashima. This marks Jódar's deepest run in a Masters 1000 event, having previously reached the quarterfinals in Madrid and Rome on clay.

Jódar, born in 2006, is the first semifinalist in a Masters 1000 tournament from his birth year. His strong performance this season, which began with him ranked around 200th in the ATP, could see him enter the Top 10 if he wins the title. His emergence offers hope for Spanish tennis, providing a potential elite peer for Carlos Alcaraz, who is currently recovering from a wrist injury.

The match against Fils was delayed by rain on Monday. Jódar had previously beaten notable players like Lorenzo Musetti and Jiri Lehecka. The rain also interrupted Tuesday's match for an hour when Jódar was leading 5-4 in the first set. Despite Fils' comeback, Jódar secured the set in a tiebreak and went on to win the match. "Today I played at a very high level against a difficult player like Arthur. I had to give my best to win," Jódar stated after the match.
