India, China discuss ways to deepen bilateral ties, people-to-people exchanges

India and China are seeking to deepen their bilateral ties and enhance people-to-people exchanges, according to discussions held during Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri's official visit to China. Misri met with Sun Haiyan, Vice Minister of the International Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, to review efforts aimed at advancing bilateral relations. Both sides focused on implementing the understanding reached by their leaders, emphasizing enhanced engagement across political dialogue, academic cooperation, think-tank interactions, and cultural exchanges. The Indian Embassy in China shared that the discussions centered on addressing priority issues for both nations. India's Ambassador to China, Vikram Doraiswami, was also present at the meeting. Foreign Secretary Misri also met with Hong Liang, Deputy Secretary General of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), to explore ways to expand bilateral exchanges at both political and people-to-people levels. These meetings are part of a broader effort by New Delhi and Beijing to stabilize and improve their bilateral relationship through consistent diplomatic engagement. Earlier, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had conveyed to his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, that maintaining stability along border regions is a prerequisite for restoring normal diplomatic engagements. Jaishankar stressed that bilateral relations must be founded on mutual respect, interest, and sensitivity. During their talks, Jaishankar also raised significant economic concerns, including market access barriers, widening trade deficits, and the unpredictability of global supply chains.
