India Envoy Confident PM Meeting Can Resolve Bangladesh Issues

Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi voiced optimism that a meeting between Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi could effectively resolve numerous bilateral issues between Dhaka and New Delhi.

Trivedi described both leaders as "people's persons," suggesting that their interaction would naturally lead to the resolution of many problems. "I have full confidence," he stated to journalists after inaugurating a children's play area at the Indian Visa Application Centre. He added, "The people are united and there will certainly be a solution. I am very confident. There is nothing negative. Things remain positive."

The envoy's comments arrive as renewed discussions surround a potential visit by Prime Minister Rahman to India. India has extended an invitation for Rahman to attend the BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12-13, in his capacity as chair of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC). A separate bilateral invitation for Rahman to visit India has been pending since February.

Indian Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed the bilateral invitation, extended when Rahman assumed office in February 2026, and noted the BRICS Summit invitation was extended as per standard practice for outreach sessions involving regional group heads. BIMSTEC includes Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand, with Bangladesh holding the chairmanship for a two-year term since April last year.

This potential for closer engagement occurs against a backdrop of recent tensions between Bangladesh and India, stemming from a speech by ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in New Delhi. The Indian government has since stated it had no role in Hasina's press conference and did not endorse her remarks, which drew strong reactions in Bangladesh.
