India's Education Minister Resigns Amid Protests Over Exam Leak Scandal

Indian Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has resigned following intense public outcry and protests over a massive leak in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), a crucial exam for medical college admissions. The resignation comes after days of escalating demonstrations, particularly led by a youth-led online movement known as the "Cockroach People's Party" (CJP).

Pradhan announced his decision to step down on X, expressing deep regret over the protests that have gripped the nation for the past 10 days. He stated that the "power of India's youth is the real strength of the nation" and that he could not allow young people to be trapped in a "vicious cycle of confusion." The NEET exam, taken by over 2 million candidates in May, was invalidated due to the leak, causing widespread anger among students and parents, and tragically, leading to some student suicides.

The CJP, which gained traction on social media, has been at the forefront of demanding systemic reforms within India's education system. Protesters celebrated Pradhan's resignation, with CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke proclaiming, "We did it." Demonstrations in the capital, New Delhi, intensified this week, with protesters attempting to march towards Parliament but being met with tear gas and batons by police.

The CJP is not a formal political party but a satirical online movement that emerged after the Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant, likened unemployed youth to "cockroaches" and "parasites" in May. This remark, widely circulated online, resonated with Gen Z and fueled the creation of the CJP, which humorously adopts a name similar to Modi's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
